Polystyrene Foam Recycling Center Opens in Thomaston

Residents of Thomaston, GA are able to recycle their polystyrene foam products more conveniently now thanks to Dart Container Corporation. The plastics manufacturer recently opened a foam recycling drop-off center for city residents that is accessible 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

Local residents, businesses, and organizations can easily recycle any foam labeled with the #6 chasing arrow symbol. This includes coffee cups, take-out containers, egg cartons, meat trays, ice chests, and much more.

Many people do not realize that polystyrene foam is recyclable, but when it is properly recycled, foam can be used to make products such as rulers, surfboards, picture frames, crown molding, and baseboards. It is also used in in eco-initiatives, such as alternative energy production and “green” buildings. And because polystyrene foam is a thermoplastic, it can be recycled over and over.

Another misconception surrounding polystyrene foam is its link to Styrofoam. Though both polystyrene foam and Styrofoam are No. 6 plastics, Styrofoam is a registered trademark of the Dow Chemical Company, and is mainly used for insulation.

How to Recycle Foam

In order to recycle foam at the new Thomaston location, people should follow four simple steps:

  1. Ensure the foam has a #6 chasing arrow symbol
  2. Rinse or wipe foodservice containers free from food
  3. Remove straws, tape, and any other non-foam material
  4. Deposit the foam in a clear or translucent bag

“We encourage Thomas residents to take advantage of the new drop-off and recycle their used foam, especially this upcoming holiday season,” says Christine Cassidy at Dart. “Many people don’t realize that foam is recyclable. We are excited and proud to continue to promote foam recycling and offer this service.”
